Phillips vs Pozidriv: Telling PH and PZ Apart Before They Chew a Screw

Half the "worn out" bits in any workshop are the wrong system in the wrong screw. The four tick marks that identify Pozidriv, why a PH2 strips a PZ2 recess, and which sizes actually move.

There are two cross-head systems in every toolbox, they look nearly identical, and they do not interchange. Run a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw under torque and the recess rounds out; run a Pozidriv bit in a Phillips screw and it never seats at all. Most of the chewed screw heads and "cheap bits that wore out in a week" we get shown trace back to exactly this — not to the bit.

The two-second identification

Look at the screw head, not the bit:

  • Pozidriv screws carry four short tick marks at 45° between the arms of the cross. Ticks = PZ. No ticks = PH.
  • Pozidriv bits have four extra ribs between the main wings, and "PZ" stamped on the shank. A Phillips bit is a clean, smooth taper with "PH".
  • On a worn screw where the ticks are hard to see: a PH bit in a PZ recess sits slightly proud and rocks; the right bit drops in with a click and stays put when you tip the driver upside down.

That last test is worth teaching to every new pair of hands on site. A bit that will not carry the screw horizontally is the wrong bit or the wrong system.

The tapered Phillips flanks convert torque into an axial force that pushes the bit out of the recess — the familiar jump-and-grind called cam-out. Whether that was a deliberate torque limiter or an accident of 1930s manufacturing is argued about endlessly; what matters is that it happens, and that it happens harder the more torque you apply. Pozidriv was designed specifically to remove it: parallel flanks and the four ribs give the bit bearing surface in the direction the force actually acts.

The practical consequence: with a correctly matched PZ2, an impact driver can seat a 5 × 80 mm screw in hardwood without the bit climbing out. With PH in the same screw you lean on the driver with your body weight to keep it engaged — and every cam-out event grinds a little steel off both parts.

What happens when you mix them

  • PH bit in a PZ screw — the taper touches only at four small edges near the rim. It feels engaged at hand pressure, then strips the recess the first time real torque arrives. This is the common one, because PH2 is the default bit in every driver.
  • PZ bit in a PH screw — the ribs prevent the bit from seating; it stands off, wobbles, and chews the opening of the recess. Usually noticed sooner, because it never feels right.

Size 2 in one system or the other covers the overwhelming majority of screws driven anywhere, which is why a box of PH2 or PZ2 is the fastest-moving item in any bit programme. Undersizing is the quiet killer: a PZ1 in a PZ2 recess reaches the bottom, transmits torque on its tip corners only, and both parts lose.

Which system you will actually meet

  • PH — drywall screws everywhere, machine screws, electronics, most fasteners in Asian and North American supply chains.
  • PZ — wood and chipboard screws across Europe and everywhere European screw brands ship: decking, kitchens, joinery. If your market takes European-pattern wood screws, it takes PZ2 bits by the thousand.
  • Torx (T20/T25) is climbing fast in premium decking and terrace screws — worth watching in any catalogue refresh, though the cross systems still dominate volume.

Bit steel, briefly

The recess geometry decides whether torque reaches the screw; the steel decides how many screws the bit survives. S2 tool steel at 58–60 HRC is the standard that holds an edge without shattering; softer no-name steel rounds off and then starts damaging good screws. For impact drivers, use bits with a machined torsion zone — the slim waist twists elastically under each impact blow instead of passing the shock to the tip. The difference is not subtle: in fastener-heavy trades a torsion PH2 routinely outlives plain bits several times over.

For buyers stocking a counter: the working spread is PH2 and PZ2 in 25 mm boxes, the same in 50 mm for reaching past clutch housings, PH3/PZ3 in small quantities, and impact torsion versions of the size-2 bits. Everything else in the screwdriver bit range sells alongside, not instead.
